PRASA's mandate is to provide safe, reliable, and affordable public transportation to the citizens of South Africa, with a focus on improving accessibility for those in underserved communities but the safety and security of commuters on trains operated by PRASA has been a major concern in recent years. Reports of train hijackings, theft, assaults, and other crimes have become commonplace, leading to a sense of fear and insecurity among commuters.

 Also, trains may not be well maintained in a number of ways, including:

  1. Failure to Inspect
  2. Lack of Maintenance
  3. Ageing Infrastructure
  4. Lack of Investment

If you believe that you have been injured as a result of a poorly maintained train or suffered harm or injury as a result of the lack of safety and security on PRASA trains, you may be able to make a claim for compensation. Typically, victims of train-related accidents or crimes can claim against PRASA, the entity responsible for providing safe and secure public transportation.

It's important to note that making a claim against PRASA can be a complex and time-consuming process.

It's advisable to seek the help of a reputable Personal Injury Attorney with experience in handling PRASA claims to increase your chances of success.

Frequently Asked Questions - Prasa Claims

Please reach us at info@krugercolaw.co.za if you cannot find an answer to your question.

The Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) is a state-owned enterprise responsible for most passenger rail services in the country.

You will need to provide as much information as possible:

  1.  Date of accident
  2.  Time of accident
  3.  Place of accident
  4.  Any other details about the incident

You will need to produce proof of being a passenger on the train i.e. provide your train ticket.

PRASA needs to be informed of your intent to claim compensation within six months of the date of the accident.  Any personal injury claims related to a train accident, be it a train collision, falling off a train or being pushed off a train, you have 3 years in which to claim from PRASA.

You can claim if:

  1. You are personally injured in a railway accident;
  2. Are the dependant of a deceased victim of a railway accident;
  3. You fall or are pushed on the station platform or pushed out of the train
  4. You fall while getting into or out of the train
